Contents insurance is a type of insurance that covers the cost of replacing your belongings in your home if they are damaged, destroyed, or stolen. These are typically items of movable property that you’d take with you if you were to move house, such as furniture, clothing, electronics, appliances, and personal items.
Coverage can vary greatly between different policies, but generally, contents insurance covers damage caused by:
- Fire
- Theft or vandalism
- Storms or floods
- Water leakage or overflow (for example, from pipes or appliances)
- Falling trees or branches
Some policies may also cover accidental damage to certain items, though this may be optional or come with additional cost. Other optional extras could include cover for items outside the home (like a bicycle or mobile phone), or for high-value items like jewellery, artwork or expensive electronics.
As with any type of insurance, it’s important to check the terms and conditions of your policy carefully to understand what is and isn’t covered, and whether there are any limits on the amount the insurer will pay out. For instance, there may be a total limit for all claims, as well as individual limits for certain categories of items or for single items.
While contents insurance isn’t legally required, it can provide valuable protection for your belongings, and can be particularly useful if you could not afford to replace them all in the event of a serious incident.
Content insurance does not cover you for damage to the property itself, only the contents inside it. For that you would need Buildings Insurance
