Skipton Building Society has opened its Delayed Start mortgage scheme to a wider group of home movers. The product, first aimed at first-time buyers in 2025, is still available to eligible first-time purchasers, including buyers in Scotland where Skipton lends under its normal residential rules.
With Delayed Start, qualifying customers can wait one, two or three months after completion before the first mortgage repayment is due. Interest runs from completion and is capitalised, so the loan costs more over its life than the same deal with repayments from month one. According to Skipton, no other UK lender currently offers this structure, and applications since launch have topped £419m.
Skipton has previously put the typical early outlay for first-time buyers at more than £30,000 across furniture, appliances, decorating and removals in the opening three months after they move. The pause is meant to ease that short cash squeeze after keys are handed over.
This is factual product coverage, not advice to take the product. Pricing, fees and who qualifies can change over time.
